Hello and welcome to my website. This is where you can find out everything you want to know about me. From my work as an actress, presenter, broadcaster and parliamentarian, to the work I do for charity.

October is ‘Black History Month’ and I have recorded a short celebratory message about the importance of knowing our history and looking to the future, because that’s where our destiny lies. Watch my video message here.

My beloved mother ‘Marmie’ passed away in 2008… I miss her so, but feel her presence in everything I do, especially when I find a white feather which means she’s watching over me. A beautiful woman whose legacy lives on and will do forever through her children, her grandchildren and her great grand children. Sadly, she died from bowel cancer, that is why I am a patron of Bowel Cancer UK

My autobiography: What are you doing here?

I wrote my autobiography because so many people kept asking me how I got to where I am today. So at age 72 I decided to write it. What I didn’t realise was that I have done so much and could only include a fraction of what I have achieved in my incredible life…I kept thinking how blessed I am and saying to myself... ‘Who would have thought!'

Order of Merit

Two days before the late Queen Elizabeth II died she appointed me to the Order of Merit which is the highest honour in the land and is bestowed by the Monarch to only 24 living people.

National Windrush Monument

In 2018 I was appointed by the then Prime Minister to Chair of the Windrush Commemoration Committee to be in charge of overseeing the creation of the National Windrush Monument celebrating and acknowledging the contribution made by Caribbean people to Britain.
